I?ll probably be MIA this weekend.  Tomorrow we?re going to drive to Boston to scope out the airport.  We?re flying out next weekend to Arkansas for a family reunion.  Sunday we?re going out looking at apartments and condos.  So weekend computer use will be sporadic at best!

We?ve about decided we?re just gonna find an apartment or condo to rent, at least for about 6 months.  We?ve been looking at houses, the prices and what the taxes are and it?s gonna be tight to try buying right now, especially what we want.  One of the guys Micheal works with said that August/September is the best time of year to buy around here.  $250K for a 1000 sq. ft. house on about a quarter acre is kinda high, and we?re just not willing to pay it.  We?d rather pay $1000-$1200 a month for an apartment where don?t have to worry about things like maintenance, taxes and such, at least for now.

Yesterday I spent most of the day on the computer looking at apartments and condos and deciding which ones we might be interested in and culling out the ones that were absolute ?no way?s?.  Today I?ll make up and print out a list complete with pictures and floor plans when available and do some calling for availability, pricing and appointments.  I found one condo with a kitchen to die for (from the looks in the pic) that?s less than 3 miles from Micheal?s office, so that?s one we?ll definitely go look at.

Amenities are another consideration and a plus over buying in some cases.  Most apartment and condo complexes have pools and fitness centers, which are not available with most houses for sale.  And, you have security and maintenance.  Sure buying a house would afford us a little more privacy, but I?m afraid it might make me a bit reclusive.  I need to be where I?ll be more likely to meet people since Micheal is working long hours.

Living in an apartment or condo will mean me feeling more secure being alone.  And if we find a place fairly close to the office, we won?t feel pressured to get another vehicle for a while.  When I want the truck, I can easily take Micheal to work.

Well, I guess I just pretty much convinced myself that apartment/condo living would be better than buying a house!!!  I hadn?t really compared apartment/condo living to buying a house til just now.  The only thing causing me to hesitate is Dawnie?s stories about her condo combats.  But we?ve lived in apartments before and, for the most part, we didn?t have any problems.

Ok, down to business.  I?ve been doing good on the eating and water.  I?m still staying within my calorie parameters.  The scale hasn?t moved this week, but that?s ok.  I do think I?m building a little more muscle with climbing stairs and walking, so I?m not gonna complain.  At least I haven?t gained again and my clothes aren?t feeling snug!!!

Another busy day yesterday.  Stayed around the apartment for the most part, but did go out to see a house.  Thought we?d found the almost-perfect one?4 bedrooms, above-ground pool, two-car garage, a little over 1900 sq.ft?.the specs the realtor sent me didn?t say that the 1900 sq.ft. included the basement!  Nobody does that!  So it was a little bitty house!  Oh well?back to the drawing board!  But at least I got some exercise cuz I went up and down the stairs here and at the house, and other walking besides.

What else is there to say?  Hmmmm?.oh yeah?I stayed within my calories again.  I?m getting good at this!  I?m definitely burning calories going up and down those stairs?as long as I don?t overdo it.  I make sure to take the stairs slowly.  And I?m getting my water in.  So that?s a good thing.

It?s a beautiful morning!  The sun?s shining, the birds are singing and it?s already 50 degrees out there!  It got up to 66 yesterday.  And speaking of yesterday?.

Can you believe it?  No blog yesterday!  And we weren?t even traveling!  But I have a good excuse!!!

I took Micheal to work and spent the entire day out shopping.  So, since he had to be there by 8:00, and I didn?t want to climb those stairs more than necessary, I didn?t come home til after I picked him up from work.  Yeah, I could have blogged after we got home but that wasn?t til 8:00 last night, so I just decided to wait til this morning.

What the heck did I do all day?  Well, a lot!  I dropped Micheal off, then went and had coffee, waiting for stores and stuff to open up.  First on my list was getting my nails done.  I haven?t done that in over 5 years?partly cuz we were traveling so much.  But I decided it was time to pamper myself.  Besides, we?re gonna to be in social situations a lot more now, and even though I don?t want to appear pretentious, I need to look more the part of an executive?s wife.  Now I just have to get used to long nails!  The hardest part so far is typing!!!!

I also needed to get a new purse.  The one I?ve been carrying is a big worn out denim thing that looks kinda like the top of a pair of jeans.  Definitely not classy!  So I got a nice black purse.  Looks much better!  I got some new dressy outfits before we came out here, so now I?m ready to shine!  Next shopping trip will include a trip to the salon to get something done with my hair!

And I had to open a local bank account.  We usually have separate accounts?well, one joint then one that?s mine only.  We haven?t done that the past couple of years because of traveling so much, so I went and opened one for me yesterday.  Micheal?s check is direct deposited in our regular account, then he writes me a check for about 90% of it and I deposit it in my account.  I put some of it in savings and use the rest to pay bills and for shopping.  I had to go to 3 different banks before I could open an account!  The first 2 said I couldn?t open an account cuz I didn?t have a Massachusetts driver?s license, and both told me that was the rule with all banks in Massachusetts.  Well, they were wrong.  Three times is charm!!!

Then I spent several hours just shopping.  I explored the area and found where all the good stores are.  And I literally spent hours walking around stores?Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Pier 1. Kohl?s, Trader Joe?s, Border?s, dollar stores?didn?t buy a whole lot, but got a few things.  I got a nice set of ceramic canisters on clearance.  And I got some pretty lace placemats and candleholders for the dining table.  Like I said, we?re gonna be socializing more now, and that includes entertaining at home.  And I definitely got some exercise in!

After that I went to pick Micheal up, but he didn?t get out of the office til a little after 6:00, so we decided to have dinner before we came home.  We got home just in time to watch American Idol, so I didn?t do anything on the computer except read a couple of blogs and check e-mail!  Now how utterly unusual is that for me?

During dinner Micheal dropped a bombshell on me.  He said we had to get our passports cuz the company is sending us to India in October for a week!  Yeah, I said ?us?!  They want him to meet the company employees there and check out the operations and they want him to take me with him.  That?s gonna be a blast!

He also said they?re working on his relocation package and should have it ready next week.  Originally they weren?t gonna do that til after he?s been here for 3 months, just incase we didn?t like it here or they didn?t like him.  They decided they didn?t want to take the risk of him leaving so they?ve decided to do it now!  So I can really start looking for a permanent place for us.  And, the relocation package is gonna include enough to pay most of the down payment on a house, so we won?t even have to wait til we have enough for that!  That?s how bad they want to keep him here!

And that?s ok with me.  I love it here (even though I keep getting lost)!  People are so friendly and helpful.  And I?ve been told that that?s the norm for this area!

I did good eating yesterday, even though we ate out.  I took Micheal lunch, which was Subway turkey subs, and I had salmon and veggies for dinner.  That was a little short of my lowest daily calorie allotment so I had a little ice cream last night while watching TV.  An early peek says my weight is holding, which is a good thing.  At least it?s not going up.  And I got in most of my water.  That?s not easy when you spend the day shopping!  But I did get in a lot of walking.  That?s a really good thing!

I haven?t had an internet connection all morning!  TV was even gone for half an hour.  Boy, was that the pits!!!  But we?re up and running now, thank goodness!

We had a good weekend.  Spent most of Saturday out running around, with a repeat yesterday!  Got lost both days, but that?s what happens when you?re getting to know a new place.  And we didn?t mind too much.  We found places we were gonna go looking for later.  The bad thing is, around here, the streets don?t run in grid like patterns like most cities.  They just run every which way!

While we were out yesterday, we decided to have dinner out.  We went to a place called Bugaboo Creek.  I had some fantastic salmon with broccoli & carrots and a baked potato.  The restaurant had a rustic d?cor, with mounted deer, moose and buffalo heads, snow shoes, skis, & a canoe on the wall, and log beams among other things.  But the best part was the talking buffalo head on the wall!  Yup, every once in a while, you?d hear this deep voice, look up, and there was that buffalo head, complete with moving mouth and blinking eyes!  It was so funny!  I can?t wait to get the grandkids out here and take them there to eat!

So I managed to get a bit of exercise this weekend?walking up and down the stairs, walking around stores and all that.  And I?m gonna take Micheal to work tomorrow and go do some more shopping?yeah Dawnie?there?s that ?S? word again!  I?ll take Micheal to work, then go find a place to sit and have coffee til the stores open up.  I?ll take him lunch, then spend the afternoon shopping til time for him to get off.  That?ll get me some more walking in.  I?ll just have to remember to take a break once in a while so I don?t overdo it.  But there is this outlet mall a couple of miles from here that I could kill most of the day at!!!!!

I did good eating this weekend.  I?d planned to have a splurge day, but it just didn?t happen!  The worst I did was pizza Saturday, but when all was said and done, I was within my calorie range!  I?m making burritos for dinner tonight, so this will probably end up being my splurge day.

Well, guess what?it snowed again last night!  The temp got up to 61 yesterday, then it snowed last night!  We got about 2-3 inches.  The trees were loaded and the cars were covered, but the pavement was clear.  It?s mostly all gone off the trees and slid off the cars now, but I couldn?t believe it?61 degrees during the day and then snow!

We spent yesterday out running around.  We spent about 2 hours running around Sam?s, and got some nice folding chairs for the balcony, among other things.  And we went to the dollar store to get some odds and ends that we needed here, but have at home?you know, stuff that we can guiltlessly get rid of after we move everything up here.

And we went grocery shopping.  I got lots of the little single-serving snak-paks of stuff?granola bites, fig bars and such.  I could have just gotten the regular packs but this way I know I won?t over-do!  Plus I got lots of veggies

The good thing is, I probably walked a couple of miles yesterday.  We went through Sam?s and hit almost every aisle, then went through parts of it again.  And we did the same thing at the grocery store.  The dollar store is in the same shopping center as the grocery store, so we parked in the middle of the lot and walked to both.  Yeah, I used my cane?been doing that since we got here because I wore myself out on the trip out with walking around at Niagara and then tackling those stairs a couple of times.

But I?m having fun!  Everywhere I go, if I open my mouth, people ask where I?m from!  I tell them originally Arkansas but the last few years, all over.  They usually laugh and then point out my accent.  Stopped at a gas station yesterday and the clerk asked the usual question.  He said he lived in Arkansas for a couple of years and loved it because everybody was so honest?they said what was on their minds and didn?t pussy-foot around about stuff!  Then he told me if I ever needed anything - information, directions, etc. ? to just come see him and he?d be tickled to help me out.

I was a little skeptical about coming here cuz I?d always heard horror stories about New Englanders and how stuffy and uppity they were.  But so far everybody we?ve met has been very friendly and helpful and quick to offer their help whenever needed.  Micheal says it?s my accent?that they get a kick out of my southern drawl!  I?m gonna hope it?s more than that!!!  But if a southern drawl is what it takes to get on the good side of a bunch of people, I can handle that!

Yesterday was gonna be a splurge day.  We did go out for some of the best pizza I?ve ever had, but I didn?t do bad there.  I only had a couple of slices.  And that was a late lunch/early dinner.  The rest of the day it was just good snacks.  And considering all the activity from yesterday?the walking and, well the walking?well, let?s just say I got a lot of exercise.

Today is gonna be spent looking at apartments and houses for rent.  We might look at a few houses for sale if we find any open houses.  Micheal?s gone to get a paper so we can see what?s out there.

Where is everybody?  Got up this morning and logged onto BuddySlim and there were no new posts from people on my subscription list since early yesterday evening.  Guess everybody?s too busy to log on.

Not much going on around here.  We?re gonna spend today shopping and exploring.  Tomorrow we?re gonna go look at some houses and apartments.

Yesterday was another good day, diet wise.  I had toast for breakfast, a salad with shrimp for lunch and spaghetti for dinner.  And I stayed well within my calorie range.

I got on the scale this morning (I get on every morning before I do anything else) and the weight on my ticker is correct for the first time in a couple of months!  I had changed it about a week ago, added a couple of pounds back because I?d gained a few pounds and they weren?t coming back off.  But I didn?t add back all that I?d gained.  Well, it?s correct now.  I got on the scale this morning and I?m officially back down to 330.  And I set a new mini-goal.  I did have it set at 300, but I decided that was too low so I set it at 320.  That doesn?t look quite as daunting as 300.  And when I reach a goal, I?ll set another, keeping them at about 10-15 lb increments.

I?ve probably been sabotaging myself to an extent by setting unrealistic looking goals.  So I?m gonna keep my goals a bit simpler and more attainable.

Well, I?m gonna go hit the shower and get dressed.  We?ve got a lot of running around to do today, and I?m gonna go out and burn a few calories!!

Well, the rant session has come to fruition.  Maintenance showed up yesterday.  I now have a new kitchen counter, new linoleum in the bathroom AND new linoleum in the kitchen!  PLUS, I have a new screen door to the balcony!  Boy did they ever get their butts in gear!  They even cleaned up their messes, which is unusual for maintenance crews, in my past experience.

So today is gonna be spent resting and getting ready for the weekend.  We?re gonna spend most of the weekend out running around.  Not sure yet what we?re gonna do, except find a place for Micheal to get a haircut.  But we are gonna spend some time exploring our new hometown and home state.  We have a little shopping to do, so we?ll work that in there somewhere.

And, that pound I said was gone earlier in the week?well, it?s officially gone, along with another.  So I guess I?m doing something right?at least for the moment.  Before, I was trying to stay in a strict 1900-2100 calorie range.  Maybe I was being a bit too strict.  I don?t know.  But I?m not changing my ticker.  I still like a pound or two being back down to what it shows.  Hopefully next week?

And, two weeks from today we?ll be on a plane heading for Arkansas for my family reunion.  I?m kinda nervous about that as I?ve not seen some of those people since my mom died a little over 9 years ago (the reunion is her family).  Some of them have always been critical of me in every way?my weight especially.  And one aunt is against divorce big time.  She let the issue slide when my sisters divorced their firsts, but I don?t know if she will with me.  I?ve always been criticized for doing things that it was ok for my sisters to do?know what I mean?  You know how some family members can get away with murder but others can?t even sneeze without being criticized?  Yup, I?m the sneezer.  Don?t quite know how that happened to be, but that?s the fact of the matter.

But I?m not going to the reunion to try to impress anybody?well, maybe I am in a way.  I?m ten times better off right now, financially and emotionally, than I was ten years ago and I want some of them to see that I?m no longer the poor unfortunate thing they used to see me as!

But I?m gonna enjoy myself.  I?ll get to spend time with my son and granddaughter.  My daughter won?t be there.  She?s moving to Minnesota with her ex-stepmother the end of this month (the timing was purposeful).  So I won?t get to see my new granddaughter.  But I?m gonna enjoy my time with the granddaughter I?m allowed to see.

Oh, and to clarify from yesterday?s post?after we moved out on my mother-in-law and she realized Micheal wasn?t gonna dump me, she changed her whole attitude.  The past 4 years she?s been wonderful!

I?m starting the morning off a little bummed!  They never showed Tuesday to replace the kitchen countertop.  It had already been rescheduled from last week because they never showed.  Today they?re supposed to replace the linoleum in the bathroom.  It was rescheduled from last week?also a no-show.  We?ll see.

If they don?t show today to do the bathroom, I?m gonna call the manager and tell her that we were considering a permanent apartment in this complex, but if this is how they treat corporate tenants we don?t even want to find out how they treat regular tenants!  I mean, really!!  And Micheal had even told them he would see what he could do to get this complex on his company?s list of preferred places to stay!  I don?t think that?s gonna happen now!

So I?m in the mood to tell somebody off?and after calling twice to brag on the maintenance crew helping get cars out of the snow and the efficiency of the housekeeping staff!  The manager better hope they show up to do the linoleum today!!!

It doesn?t help that I?m in misery right now!  I have a boil down in my nether regions that Micheal lanced last night, and it hurts to sit!!!  Heck, it hurts just to put a pair of pants over it!  Yeah, I know?too much information!!!  Well, I?m not having a good morning.  And since I seldom get on here and vent or rant, I?m doing it this morning!!!  So suck it up or quit reading!!!

Ya know?come to think of it, this is the first time I?ve been really bummed about anything in a long time!  I think the last time was when we were living with Micheal?s mom several years ago!  The three of us had bought a big house together and she decided it was HER house.  It was a 5 bedroom house with a huge living room, a family room, and a two car garage, which we weren?t allowed to park in.  Her car went in the middle of it.  We got one bedroom, and it wasn?t even the master bedroom.  She got that.  And she got the rest of the house?even the kitchen!  Even the kitchen?  Well, consider this?I did all the cooking?ALL of it!!  But I had to use my own cookware, and I couldn?t even keep it in the kitchen!  I had to keep it in our bedroom.  And we got one shelf in the fridge and one in the freezer.  We had to give her our share of the house payment so she could pay it?we couldn?t do it.  But a lot of times she didn?t pay it.  She spent the money on other things and we?d have to come up with more money to make a late payment!  We finally got fed up with it.  We went out and found a house to rent and got a moving truck.  We pulled the truck up in front of the house, then told her we were leaving and she was on her own!  She ended up selling the house!

And it was all my fault, so she said.  But we?re ok now.  She calls me her daughter now!  She realized I wasn?t gonna let her walk all over me, and neither was Micheal.

Now why did I tell you guys all that?  I don?t know.  I guess I just felt like it.  And, it was the only time I?ve been really bummed about something in several years until now!

I did fine with my eating yesterday.  I went back up to my 1900-2100 calorie range for one day.  Today and tomorrow I?m gonna stay in the 1500-1700 calorie range.  Then this weekend I?m gonna have a real splurge day?just not sure which day yet.  The scale still says I?ve lost one pound.  That?s nothing to celebrate since it?s a pound I lost before but regained (along with about 5 or 6 others).  But I?m just waiting to see if this changing up the calorie ranges is gonna work.

I?m just having a hard time figuring this out.  I stayed strict with my calorie counts for several weeks and lost a few pounds, then gained them all back without changing my calorie intake.  I didn?t even have splurge days!  This always happens.  It doesn?t matter what kind of diet I?m on?I?ll lose weight, then start gaining without changing a thing.  But that cycle has got to stop!  And I?m trying to figure out how to stop it.  Ooops!  Guess I had one more rant left in me!!!!!!

It?s gonna be a beautiful day out there today?a bit nippy, but beautiful!  It?s only 15 degrees out there and only supposed to get to 35, but the sun is shining and the birds are singing!!!!

Who cares if it?s cold?!  I?m not going anywhere!!  I?m still waiting for them to come replace my kitchen countertop and the linoleum in the bathroom!  They were supposed to do the bathroom Friday, but never showed.  That was rescheduled for tomorrow.  They were supposed to do the kitchen countertop yesterday, but never showed (actually that was originally scheduled for last week, too).  I don?t know when they?ll reschedule that for.

At least I know housekeeping is coming today.  Of course, there?s not much for them to do.  This place is practically spotless!!  But they?ll sweep, mop, vacuum, clean the bathroom and change the bed and the bathroom linens anyway.  So tonight we?ll sleep in a fresh bed.  Hmmmm?maybe I?ll spray the sheets with a little lavender after they leave!!!

I?ve been staying between 1500 & 1800 calories a day, and it looks like maybe I?ve shaken things up a bit.  I got on the scale this morning, after 4 days of reduced calorie intake, and I?m down a pound.  Of course I still have a couple of days til my ?official? weigh-in, but I?m hopeful.  I mean, jeez, I was to the point that I was gonna have to go buy bigger jeans cuz mine were about to cut me in half, and I didn?t bring the bigger ones with me cuz they were falling off of me when we left!  So maybe these will be comfortable now.  Luckily I brought a pair of stretchy pants to kick around in!!!  Those are what I?ve been wearing when we?ve gone out!

I think we?ve about decided to just rent an apartment instead of buying a house for right now.  All the houses I?ve previewed so far have just been?well, let?s say they?re less than desirable!  Most are 2-story with all bedrooms & bathrooms on the 2^nd floor.  And in most cases, a 3 bedroom, 2-bath is around or under 1100 sq. ft. on a quarter acre or less and priced at over $250,000!!!  Oh, and with most places, the parking is on the street!!!!!!  At least if we rent an apartment, we won?t have to worry about maintenance (unless we rent in this complex, which I don?t see happening!).  We just won?t have the privacy we?d like.  But we would most likely have a gym onsite as well as a swimming pool during the summer (and I can make sure to only look at the ones that have a pool and gym), so those would be a plus!

Woke up this morning to a white world again!  Well, actually, there was about an inch of snow on the vehicles in the parking lot when we went to bed last night, but there wasn?t quite as much there this morning.  The temp actually went up during the night.  The parking lot and drive are just wet, so it won?t be long before last night?s snow is gone.

This area, or at least this apartment complex, is much different from any other we?ve lived in.  I told you yesterday about the jerk parked next to me shoveling snow from around his car and tossing it against and behind my truck.  Well, the maintenance crew was out yesterday with their plow trucks clearing out the parking spaces that were still covered in snow.  There was a car parked just below and to the right of our balcony that was totally snowed and iced in and the owner was trying to get out, but not having much luck.  Well, one of the maintenance guys took his truck and plow and plowed just as close to the guy?s car as he could get.  Then he proceeded to help dig the rest of the snow out from around the car until the guy was able to drive it out.  Now that was consideration.

I was watching all of this from the balcony and when they finished, as the maintenance man was walking back to his truck, I complimented him for helping the guy, and commented about the older lady parked a couple of spaces over having the same problem the day before.

Now listen to this!!!  About half an hour later, I heard a lot of noise coming from outside again and I went to look out the door at the balcony.  There were TWO maintenance trucks with plows out there.  One was using his truck to clear snow from around the lady?s car while the other directed him.  Then they both started shoveling.  Apparently they knew the lady, or at least knew which apartment she is in, cuz they had the keys and had the car started.  And they worked til they had that car out of the snow and into a completely cleared spot.  They even cleaned all the snow off of the car.  Of course, I had to say something to them after they finished.

I thought that was pretty good in this day and age of ?fend for yourself?.  They could have just gone about their own business and let those people do their own dirty work, but no, they jumped in and helped them out.  And yes, I let management know what I thought about it.  You know me?I?m just too outspoken to keep my mouth shut and not say a word!

So now I?m sitting around waiting for maintenance to come put in a new countertop today, and they?ll be putting new linoleum in the bathroom on Thursday.  It was supposed to all be done last week, but delays occurred.

It looks like it?s gonna be a beautiful day out there today.  The wind?s blowing pretty good, but the sun?s shining.  Hopefully the weekend will be just as nice, cuz we?re planning on doing some running around!

Oh, almost forgot?I was under calories again yesterday.  The past 3 days I?ve been within 1500-1800 calories a day.  Hopefully I?ll start seeing some changes by the weekend.  If not, then I?m gonna have to figure something else out.
